14	히스기야가 사자의 손에서 편지를 받아보고 여호와의 성전에 올라가서 히스기야가 그 편지를 여호와 앞에 펴 놓고
15	그 앞에서 히스기야가 기도하여 이르되 그룹들 위에 계신 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주는 천하 만국에 홀로 하나님이시라 주께서 천지를 만드셨나이다
16	여호와여 귀를 기울여 들으소서 여호와여 눈을 떠서 보시옵소서 산헤립이 살아 계신 하나님을 비방하러 보낸 말을 들으시옵소서
17	여호와여 앗수르 여러 왕이 과연 여러 민족과 그들의 땅을 황폐하게 하고
18	또 그들의 신들을 불에 던졌사오니 이는 그들이 신이 아니요 사람의 손으로 만든 것 곧 나무와 돌 뿐이므로 멸하였나이다
19	우리 하나님 여호와여 원하건대 이제 우리를 그의 손에서 구원하옵소서 그리하시면 천하 만국이 주 여호와가 홀로 하나님이신 줄 알리이다 하니라
20	아모스의 아들 이사야가 히스기야에게 보내 이르되 이스라엘 하나님 여호와의 말씀이 네가 앗수르 왕 산헤립 때문에 내게 기도하는 것을 내가 들었노라 하셨나이다
21	여호와께서 앗수르 왕에게 대하여 이같이 말씀하시기를 처녀 딸 시온이 너를 멸시하며 너를 비웃었으며 딸 예루살렘이 너를 향하여 머리를 흔들었느니라
22	네가 누구를 꾸짖었으며 비방하였느냐 누구를 향하여 소리를 높였으며 눈을 높이 떴느냐 이스라엘의 거룩한 자에게 그리하였도다
23	네가 사자들을 통하여 주를 비방하여 이르기를 내가 많은 병거를 거느리고 여러 산꼭대기에 올라가며 레바논 깊은 곳에 이르러 높은 백향목과 아름다운 잣나무를 베고 내가 그 가장 먼 곳에 들어가며 그의 동산의 무성한 수풀에 이르리라
24	내가 땅을 파서 이방의 물을 마셨고 나의 발바닥으로 애굽의 모든 강들을 말렸노라 하였도다
25	네가 듣지 못하였느냐 이 일은 내가 태초부터 행하였고 옛날부터 정한 바라 이제 내가 이루어 너로 견고한 성들을 멸하여 무너진 돌무더기가 되게 함이니라
26	그러므로 거기에 거주하는 백성의 힘이 약하여 두려워하며 놀랐나니 그들은 들의 채소와 푸른 풀과 지붕의 잡초와 자라기 전에 시든 곡초같이 되었느니라
27	네 거처와 네 출입과 네가 내게 향한 분노를 내가 다 아노니
28	네가 내게 향한 분노와 네 교만한 말이 내 귀에 들렸도다 그러므로 내가 갈고리를 네 코에 꿰고 재갈을 네 입에 물려 너를 오던 길로 끌어 돌이키리라 하셨나이다

Hezekiah’s Prayer

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD. 15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said: “O LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made the heavens and the earth. 16 Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 17 Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands 18 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 19 So now, O LORD our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O LORD, are God alone.”

Isaiah Prophesies Sennacherib’s Fall

20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Your prayer to me about Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. 21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him:

  “She despises you, she scorns you—
    the virgin daughter of Zion;
  she wags her head behind you—
    the daughter of Jerusalem.
22   “Whom have you mocked and reviled?
    Against whom have you raised your voice
  and lifted your eyes to the heights?
    Against the Holy One of Israel!
23   By your messengers you have mocked the Lord,
    and you have said, ‘With my many chariots
  I have gone up the heights of the mountains,
    to the far recesses of Lebanon;
  I felled its tallest cedars,
    its choicest cypresses;
  I entered its farthest lodging place,
    its most fruitful forest.
24   I dug wells
    and drank foreign waters,
  and I dried up with the sole of my foot
    all the streams of Egypt.’
25   “Have you not heard
    that I determined it long ago?
  I planned from days of old
    what now I bring to pass,
  that you should turn fortified cities
    into heaps of ruins,
26   while their inhabitants, shorn of strength,
    are dismayed and confounded,
  and have become like plants of the field
    and like tender grass,
  like grass on the housetops,
    blighted before it is grown.
27   “But I know your sitting down
    and your going out and coming in,
    and your raging against me.
28   Because you have raged against me
    and your complacency has come into my ears,
  I will put my hook in your nose
    and my bit in your mouth,
  and I will turn you back on the way
    by which you came.
