(2) “The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies…"

The book of Nahum is a prophecy about Nineveh which is the capital of the Assyria. It predicted the fall of Assyria because they had oppressed God’s people and turned from God and His ways. It shows God rules over nations and will hold them accountable for their sins.

Today Nahum begins with a statement that God is a jealous God who is filled with vengeance and rage. God takes revenge on all who oppose Him, but He is slow to get angry. However, He never lets the guilty go unpunished. Nahum too is constantly warning us about the danger of turning against God because God maintains His anger against His enemies. He is also reminding us that God will not allow anything to come between Him and us because of the jealousy. Although God is very patient with us, but also God’s wrath is very real as he described today. This tells me not to forget the fact that He is a God of mighty power and justice and will punish sin. The message received today is that God demands my complete and undivided attention for Him. For this purpose, He has been shown us His anger and jealousy even though He is indeed a God of love and forgiveness. As an application, I will pray and thank the Lord Jesus that I have been set free from the wrath of God because of Him.
